George E. Moore III, a resident of Virginia Beach since 1975, died suddenly on October 22, 2022, in Williamsburg while celebrating his 72nd birthday. He was born October 21, 1950, in Kinston, NC, the son of George E Moore, Jr. and Mary Louise Rumley Moore.

He grew up in Farmville, NC and graduated from Farmville High School, Class of 1969, where he was a star football player, as well as lettering in track and basketball. He was named All East Regional in football and basketball, and was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Key Club. He received a full scholarship to play football for the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill where he graduated in 1973 with a BA in Political Science, and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.

After graduation, George began working as a mortgage loan originator for Cameron Brown Company in Raleigh, NC. He was transferred to Virginia Beach where he quickly became their top producer for many years and was soon promoted to manager. He served as president for both Tidewater Mortgage Bankers and Virginia Mortgage Bankers, while extremely active in a number of other professional associations. His move to Virginia Beach did more than launch his career; shortly after moving there, he met the love of his life, Janet Wrenn Moore. They were true and devoted partners throughout their marriage, and just celebrated 44 years of marriage in September.

George began working for Nowlin Mortgage after his time with Cameron Brown. Shortly thereafter, he and Janet, along with close friends and associates, joined together to form and open Enterprise Mortgage where he served as president for 20 years. His next career move took him to Tidewater Mortgage Services where, after 45 very successful years in the mortgage profession, he finally retired.

George was a member of the United Methodist Church his entire life. He taught Sunday school, participated in mission trips, and volunteered for countless projects and activities. When it came to volunteering and serving, his true passion was the Judeo-Christion Outreach Center (JCOC) in Virginia Beach – a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower homeless families, individuals, and veterans and help them to be self-supporting, productive, and independent members of our community.

As a business owner he organized numerous fundraisers including huge yard sales, skate-a-thons, golf tournaments, and other activities to support the JCOC's mission. He served on their Board of Directors for fifteen years, with nine of those as co-chair of the board. His term recently ended, and in honor of George's stepping down, Mayor Bobby Dyer presented him with a proclamation where he lauded George's tireless work, unselfish volunteering, dedication and tireless. The mayor then honored him by declaring Friday, October 14, 2022, as George Moore Day in the City of Virginia Beach.

George was a member of the Pride Boating Club, where he enthusiastically joined the club's participation in the Downtown Norfolk Grand Illumination Parade. It was one of George's favorite annual holiday events, especially when the club won the Best Illumination prize a number of consecutive years.

George was also an active member and ally of Hampton Roads Pride, as well as many other community groups and projects that led to him receiving the prestigious Daniel M. Stone Humanitarian Award from the Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission in 2016.

He loved to play golf and tennis, going to the beach, and spending hours working in his yard. He also loved going on cruises with Janet and traveling around the world. George was always ready to talk about the stock market and sports – both passions of his. He was a passionate sports fan and loved his Tar Heels, the NY Yankees and the Washington Commanders. But most of all he loved his wife, Janet and his son, James (Jimmie) Moore whom he was most proud. Besides being a wonderful husband and father, George was a kind, loving man who never met a stranger. He always approached everyone with a smile and was a friend to all. He will be greatly missed by so many.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Lou Davis. Surviving in addition to his wife, Janet Wrenn Moore are his son James (Jimmie) Moore and his partner Devlin Chrnelich; his nephew Robert L. Davis, Jr and niece Lou Steen and their families.

Interment will be at 12 noon on Monday, October 31, at Forest Hills Cemetery in Farmville, NC.
