On Friday, July 15, 2022, the patriarch of the McGee family was called back home to fold into the mystery, at the age of 74. James Allen McGee, aka Jim, Papa Jim, Papa or Don Jim, depending on the caller, died peacefully in his home in Sonora, Calif.

Papa Jim was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., on April 19, 1948, on his grandmother, Verna

McGee's, birthday (she always said he was her best birthday present). He was the oldest of five children born to Frank and Catherine McGee. His siblings following were Janette, Ann, Donna and Robert.

The family moved from Oklahoma to Colorado where Grandpa McGee continued his work with the post office and became an Episcopalian minister. Jim's last sibling, Robert, was born in Colorado in 1959. In 1964, the McGee family migrated to Yuba City, Calif., where Grandpa McGee was promoted from a postal inspector to a postmaster.

Jim graduated from Yuba City High School in 1966. He attended Yuba College. Then, in 1968, Jim joined the U.S. Army. He served three years in the Vietnam War. Afterwards, he returned to Yuba City in 1971, where he met and married Georgia Petersen. She had two young children, Robert (Bobby) Wayne and Denise Joy, who he happily adopted and took on the role of their father. He rejoined what turned out to be his lifelong occupation.

His father, Frank, rose in rank in the postal service, ending as a postmaster as well. In 1975, Georgia gave birth to James Allen Jr. ( Jamie). The family then moved to Grass Valley, Calif., where Jim was promoted from mailman to his first role as postmaster at the Rio Oso Post Office.

In 1978, he took another promotion that brought him to be the Postmaster at Mariposa. Over his 20 years of residency in Mariposa, he became deeply engrained in community service. He wore many hats including driving the ambulance and acting as a reserve deputy sheriff. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars where at one point he was the VFW Chapter president.

He was the president of the Mariposa Lions Club at one point, as well. He also participated in the American Legion, E. Clampus Vitus, Moose Lodge, as well as serving on Mariposa Public Utility District (MPUD) board. He forged many friendships in the form of brotherhood, with too many beloved guys to mention. He was respected and loved by most. His sense of humor and laugh will never be forgotten. He was a "go to" guy and always had some sort of solution to most problems.

In 1992, Jim married Suzanne Noel. In 1994, they gave life to Joseph Frank. In May of 1999, Jim accepted the position of postmaster in Sonora. The McGees relocated there, and that was where he finished off his days. In 1999, Suzanne gave birth to Connor Wayne, now 22 years old. He remains the youngest of the Jim McGee Clan.

Papa Jim had many passions, including but not limited to, building black powder guns, shooting guns, hunting, tomahawk throwing, 4-wheel drive clubs, camping, participating in old style rendezvous, fishing (especially in the Sea of Cortez when visiting his Mulege home), tinkering on cars and much, much more.

Jim is survived by his girlfriend, Gail Brickley; brother, Robert; sister, Donna; brother-in-law, Wayne Lunghren; sons, Robert, Jamie, Joseph and Connor; daughter, Denise; granddaughters, Mahayley and Judah; grandsons, Justin and Christopher; great granddaughters, Preslei, Averlei, Ella and Vaeda; great-grandson, Manual; nephews, Jonathan, Nathan Dean, Stacey Kelsh, Jeffery Kelsh and Jason Dean; nieces, Jennifer Kelsh and Kera McGee; cousin, Melanie Micue; second cousins, Andrew (Andy) McGee and Samantha Carder Turley; third cousins, Claire and Kathryn; and many more friends and loved ones too numerous to mention.

Family members will be dispensing some of his ashes in Pacifico bottles and dispersing them around the world in a couple of his favorite places (to be recycled at a later time, of course). The remaining ashes will be interned at the Mariposa County Cemetery in Mariposa.

The family invites you to come and celebrate the life of James Allen McGee on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, graveside, at the Mariposa Cemetery, 4979 Joe Howard Road, Mariposa.
