Stories told at the Whitfield Family Reunion by Eliza Ruth "Lila" Schumacher, August 1-3, 1992

Rachel was born in New Jersey to Samuel Carlyon (pronounced "car lion") Treloar and Mary Hocking Treloar. One story is that Mary was only 4 ft tall and weighed 200 lbs. In contrast, Rachel's father was very tall and apparently was very loud when upset. Rachel and William were married in Michigan. Rachel's sister, Sarah Treloar, told Lila that William and Rachel spent their wedding night in the Treloar's home and that William wet the bed that night. Rachel's parents were not in favor of Rachel and William moving to Wyoming from Michigan. When Rachel was injured in 1912 (see below), they wanted to take her back to Detroit to have better doctors. They were unhappy with William for not letting her go back with them.

Rachel's brothers and sisters were Samuel Carlyon Treloar, John Pierce Treloar, Sarah Treloar Chapman, Richard Carlyon Treloar, Mary Treloar Williams, Lylie Treloar Toms, Rose Treloar Kelly and Ruth Treloar Graham. Sarah compiled a mimeographed descendants chart of the Treloar and Whitfield families.

Sarah was bitter against William because when Rachel had her accident and Lila was born, Sarah wanted to adopt Lila. Sarah had 3 boys and often said Lila was the daughter she was supposed to have. William wouldn't let Sarah adopt Lila and take her back to Detroit. Sarah was very bitter when Rachel died. Lila says that Dad was a pretty special person to her and it would have broken her heart if Sarah had taken her away from him.

Rachel's paternal grandparents: Margaret Carlyon (daughter of Samuel Carlyon and Rachel Pierce Carlyon) and Daniel Treloar. Her maternal grandparents: Mary Terrill (daughter of Stephen Terrill and Margaret Davis Terrill) and William Hocking of Hocking crystal fame).

In 1912 Rachel was pregnant with Lila. She was riding in a horse-drawn buggy when her son, George, frightened the horse to play a trick. The buggy tipped over causing Rachel to go into premature labor. Rachel remained paralyzed on her left side until her death 5 years later. Lila remembers climbing up on her mother's lap to be rocked. Rachel would play the organ with one hand. Lila remembers her playing "Trust and Obey" over and over again.
