Thomas C. McBryde, 75 of Paradise, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday October 20, 2022. He was born on August 12, 1947 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI to Dr. Lyman and Virginia McBryde, and graduated from Sault High in the summer of 1965. Tom honorably served as a Military Policeman in the U.S. Army from 1967-1972 at the U.S. Army Winter Test Center, Ft. Greely, Alaska, earning the rank of Sergeant.
Tom began a 40 year career with the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office in 1974, earning a well-deserved retirement in 2014. During his career, he was deputized under eight different Sheriffs over Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac counties. He became the first resident deputy to serve Whitefish, Chippewa, Hulbert, and Trout Lake Townships in 1979. He was later promoted to road Sergeant and served as Undersheriff of Chippewa County for six years beginning in 1997. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as Chief Medical Examiner Investigator of Chippewa County, as well as a certified accident reconstructionist.
After his retirement, he spent several summers working in maintenance for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at the Rivermouth State Campground. Tom loved to hunt, fish, build things and spend time with his children and grandchildren, who he absolutely adored.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Lyman and Virginia McBryde, and his in-laws, Lee and Arlene Miles.
He leaves behind his wife, Barb, of Paradise; sons Rich (Jess) McBryde and Tim McBryde all of Paradise; grandchildren Miranda and Kim McBryde, both of Paradise, August (Alex) Johnson, Makaila Bufford and Jacob Davidson all of Newberry; brothers Richard (Mary-Beth) McBryde of Sault Ste. Marie and Steve (Linda) McBryde of Battle Ground, Washington; sister Betsy McBryde-Bastin-Greer of Milwaukie, Oregon; several nieces and nephews, as well as a longtime partners and dear friends, Mike Baker of Georgia, "Uncle" Perry Cushman of Pickford and retired Michigan State Police Trooper Jim King of Coldwater.
Per his request, cremation services were accorded. A gathering of family and friends will take place Wednesday November 2, 2022 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm at the Whitefish Township Community Center in Paradise. A memorial service celebrating the life of Tom will follow at 2:00 pm with Pastor Dave Holden, of the First Baptist Church of Paradise, officiating. Interment with military honors conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #74 will follow at the First Baptist Church Cemetery.
Immediately following the interment, the family extends an invitation to join back at the Community Center for desserts, coffee and fellowship.
