1940 – December 22, 2021
John (Jack) Wood, aged 81, passed away peacefully at St Benedict's Hospice in his hometown of Sunderland, England, on December 22, 2021. He led "a life well lived" and will be deeply missed by family and friends on two continents.
Born in Sunderland to Jack and Gladys in 1940, he was the eldest in the family that grew to include six sisters and two brothers. He learned responsibility at an early age and was also inspired by his father's military career.
He served in both the Royal Military Police and the Parachute Regiment Territorial Army, which took him to locations around the world. After honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal, his work was varied but usually vehicle or transportation based. As a widower, in 2000 he retired as Transport Manager of a logistics company in Somerset, England, and moved to Ocala to marry Angie, The Luckiest Woman in The World.
Jack was a dependable and valuable volunteer in Ocala. He volunteered for Hospice of Marion County, in the Transitions program and for several special events, including Camp Mariposa and the Steel Horse Stampede. He earned his ten-year pin for service. He was a Regent in Leadership Ocala/Marion Partners, and a volunteer for Marion County Public Schools, especially Osceola Middle School. He was part of the hard-working group of Friends of Silver Springs who helped prepare for the attraction's transition to a state park and volunteered there until moving back to Sunderland in 2017.
He was the cherished husband of Angie for 21 years. Proud father of Debbie, Mark, John, Justine, and Gavin. Also, a dear grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend of many.
A service will be held at Sunderland Crematorium on Friday, January 14, 2022, at 2:30 PM (9:30 AM Ocala time). For webcast details for the service, contact Scollen and Wright Funeral Home, [email protected].
In lieu of flowers or plants, please make memorial contributions to Hospice of Marion County (www.hospiceofmarion.com) or to the Friends of Silver Springs State Park, www.thefriendsofsilversprings.org.
