Matthew Joseph Holland was born on 10 September 1857 in Norway, his father, Mads, was 38 and his mother, Erikka, was 27. He married Louisa Carolina Heyer on 29 June 1882 in Stirling, South Australia. They had 11 children in 17 years. He died on 28 August 1918 in Scotts Creek, South Australia, at the age of 60.
