Charles and his older brother Samuel enlisted as Privates in K Company, 12th New Hampshire Infantry in August 1862. Since Charles was just age 20, his father had to attest to Charles' age and give his permission to enlist.
Tragically, nine months later, Charles died from smallpox in the Marine Hospital in Baltimore. He was unmarried. His burial location is not known.
In 1867, his father Samuel started receiving a government pension as the surviving parent of a deceased Union soldier.
