Pearl P. Smith, 77, of Idaho Falls, who helped establish the Darby Girls Camp, died May 6, 1989, at her home of a heart attack.
She was born Nov. 8, 1911, at Plano to Joseph M. and S. Minnie Chandler Peterson. She attended Edmunds Elementary and High School, and Ex-Cel-Cis Beauty School.
She married S.J. "Jim" Smith on Sept. 27, 1937, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He died March 4, 1987.
She lived in Plano for about 20 years, then in Ogden, Utah, for four years, and in Idaho Falls for the past 53 years.
She was a beauty operator and made draperies for Ahlstrom's Furniture Store and Karl T. Homer's.
Pearl helped establish the Darby Girls Camp and the Girls Campcrafter program in this area. She served as president of the PTA. She was an active member of the LDS Church.
Surviors include five sons, Alan James Smith of Rigby, Gayle Joseph Smith of Salt Lake City, Craig Rodney Smith of Boise, and Lynn Dennis Smith and Paul Richard Smith, both of Idaho Falls; two siters, Belle Hemsley of Ogden, Utah, and Leda Lee of Provo, Utah; a brother, George Peterson of Sugar City; 29 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Evian "Pete" Peterson.
