Barbara Wright Scannell was born on July 27, 1951 to Perry (Kib) and Thelma (Susie) Gant Wright. She passed away on Friday, September 14, 2018 in Wilmington, NC during Hurricane Florence. Her death was not storm related. A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 11 am from the Chapel of Scottsboro Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10 am until time for the service.
Barbara was the first grandchild of both sets of grandparents, Joe and Nellie Gant and Arthur (Cracker) and Donnie May Wright all of Hollywood. Barbara began her schooling at Hollywood Elementary. When the family moved to Scottsboro, she entered the Scottsboro School System. She was a member of the Class of 1969.
Barbara and Joe made their home in Wilmington, NC for over 45 years. Their church home is Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church of Wilmington. Having direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, they enjoyed time on their boat enjoying surf and sand. Barbara particularly enjoyed observing dolphins in their natural habitat.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 48 years, Vincent Joseph (Joe) Scannell, Jr., mother, Thelma Gant Wright of Scottsboro, sister, Deby (Marsha Harbin) of Hoover, AL., aunts, Kathy Gant Wondell and Irene Precise Wright both of Scottsboro, Bonnie Allison Henninger of Stevenson and Juanita Wright Powell of Hollywood, and uncle, Glen Gant of Fackler and eight first cousins. She is preceded in death by her father, Perry K. Wright, and several aunts and uncles and a first cousin.
Barbara was a trained cosmetologist. She enjoyed all types of music with her favorites during childhood being Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton, interior decorating, home renovating, gardening, photography, and a variety of crafts. She and Joe enjoyed attending concerts and live shows.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association, 6275 University Blvd. Suite 37, PMB 120 Huntsville, AL 35806.
