On the 10th October 1917, the 13th Royal Scots, as part of the 45th Infantry Brigade, were ordered to attack the German defences at Vampir Farm, Zevencot, near Zonnebeke, during the Battle of Ypres. The attack was supposed to be supported by a squadron of tanks, but due to ground conditions they never arrived. As they approached Vampir Farm the 13th Royal Scots were all but annihilated.
The remains of William Leslie have never been identified and his name appears on the Tyne Cot Memorial
