After graduating from Stonington High School, Peggy married the love of her life, and they raised their family in Wequetequock. In addition to being a homemaker, she did the bookkeeping for the family business, Homewood Cabinet Company. Peggy was an avid bowler and spent almost 50 years on numerous leagues. She spent much of her time at the Westerly Senior Center and enjoyed numerous activities which included chair caning, shuffleboard, and playing canasta. Peggy also volunteered for the food pantry at the Immaculate Conception Church. She and her late husband were lifetime members of the Westerly- Pawcatuck Region Antique Auto Club. They attended many local and out of state car events where they could show off their antique automobiles. Peggy was a loyal fan of the UConn women's and Connecticut Sun basketball teams and attended many games. She also loved watching the Boston Red Sox.
Peggy leaves her four children, William Varas (Abbe) of Port St. Lucie, FL., Michael Varas (Nicole) of North Stonington, Stephen Varas of Pawcatuck and Janet Clark (William) of Charlestown, RI; her grandchildren, Tad, Jason, Kevin, Joshua, Justin, Jessica, Meaghan, Jamie, Madison, William, Hunter and Cassidy; and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Robert Varas (Johanna) of FL; sisters-in-law, Elaine Gingerella (Robert) of Pawcatuck and Margaret Hewitt of Gales Ferry; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Ronald Hewitt.
Her family will receive relatives and friends Monday, October 17th from 5-7 pm at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, October 18th at 11:00 AM at St. Mary Church 95 Main St. Stonington. Following her mass, she will be buried at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic.
