A son of the Reverend John G. and Matilda (Hamilton) Fee, Ed grew up in Clermont, OH, later moving to Berea, KY where his father founded Berea College.

While a student at Berea College, Ed met and subsequently married Enrie J. Hamilton who was the head of the music department at the college.

The Fees returned to Enrie's home county where Ed built a home near Clarksburg, raising livestock and maintaining a cattle feed lot. He owned several farms in Decatur Co. and was a director and stockholder in the Clarksburg State Bank. Ed was a member of the Union church in Berea, KY and attended the Clarksburg and Kingston Presbyterian churches during his years in Decatur Co., IN.
