SARASOTA, Fla. — Ann Engster, 93, formerly of Warren, but whose heart always remained there, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and dear friend, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, from pneumonia,
Anna Margaret Engster was born Nov. 20, 1924, in Warren, the youngest child of Minnie and Meredith Lucy of Warren.
She lived in the homes of her daughter Diane Engster and her husband, the Rev. L. William Yolton of Bradenton, Fla., for the last six years.
She graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1942, and worked at the Peerless Electric Co. She graduated from Kent State with an associate degree in applied business in 1982 and a bachelor's degree in recreation and leisure services in 1988. She was active in the YWCA as a water safety instructor and started the Encore breast cancer recovery program there. She was a member of the Child Conservation League (CCL) when her children were young.
She grew up with her sister and two brothers, who watched over her. She was happily married to the late Harry G. Engster for 66 years and was blessed with two children. She was dedicated to her family, raising her children and making a loving home and a bountiful garden. She enjoyed visiting with her granddaughters. She and Harry opened their home to "Freddy" Mercuri, an exchange student from Argentina, through high school and college, who became an American citizen in 2011.
She was a swimming instructor at the Warren public pool and schools, which included teaching children with disabilities. She helped with Meals on Wheels. She took pride in her golf, winning many trophies, playing in several leagues around Warren, and still playing and winning in Florida at the age of 88.
She and Harry were active members of the First Presbyterian Church where she was a Stephen Minister and played in the golf league. Harry and Ann loved playing bridge and dancing together to the big band sound. She spent many winters in Sarasota with her family, playing tennis and golf, dining with friends from Warren, sitting on the beach and watching sunsets. She occasionally attended Peace Presbyterian Church, with Bill and Diane, where she enjoyed listening to Diane playing her oboe.
Ann is survived by her children, Diane and Charles; granddaughters, Jessica Winter and Jennifer Robinson; brother, Charles Lucy; nephew, Bill Lucy; and special nieces, Sue Mangino, Ann Schugarts and Cathy Sain. Her dog, Dee, was always by her side.
