Renaugh was the son of Joseph and Nancy Charlotte McEntire Moss of Union County, Georgia and Macon County, North Carolina. His father settled in the Cherokee Nation of Lumpkin County and was said to be a Methodist preacher and his wife of Cherokee descent.

Renaugh, the youngest son, married about 1865 to Cynthia Melissa Freeland of Ducktown, Polk County, Tennessee and they settled next to her parents, Howell and Zelpha Campbell Freeland. Their children were William Howell, Joseph Campbell, Columbus Melton, Raumma Elizabeth, Richard Christenberry, Jeremiah Edward, and George Renaugh.

In 1887 Renaugh and Cynthia Watts had purchased 170 acres of land on Black Wolk Creek in Scott County, Tennessee and spent the remainder of their lives there. They lived out their last years with son Jeremiah Edward Watts and wife Lora Ann Duncan.
