Captain - Navigator Blackmore was killed in the crash of U.S. Air Force B-47E Stratojet #52-186 while attempting an emergncy landing at Duluth Municipal Airport in Minnesota when the flight crew believed they had an in-flight wing fire. An investigation concluded the crew experienced a weather phenomena known as aerodynamic vapor condensation, during a routine flight from their base in Lincoln, Nebraska, which gave the appearance of gray smoke over the wing, at the same time an engine warning light appeared. Major William Gardner called in a "mayday" and shut down his left wing engines, but the bomber lost power while making a final left bank turn for the city airport and crashed into woods.

Also killed were:

Major William F. Gardner
Captain William A. Baldwin
