Actor. Perhaps best recognized for his roles as Rubeus Hagrid in the Warner Bros. movie adaptations of author J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Born in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, his acting career began on the theatrical stage where he featured in a number of comedy sketches and groups including the acting troupe, "The Comic Strip Presents." He transitioned to film in the early '80's when he appeared in a variety of films ranging from the science fictions films "Flash Gordon," "Death Watch," and "Krull" to musicals such as 1986's "Absolute Beginners." Maintaining a presence on both the stage and small screen, he starred as Sir John Falstaff in Sir Kenneth Branagh's 1989 production of "Henry V," as well as a number of British series including "The Young Ones," and "Tutti Frutti." The 1990's proved to be a fortuitous decade for Coltrane's career, when he appeared as ex-KGB officer Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in two James Bond films; 1995's, "GoldenEye," and 1999's "The World is Not Enough." Two years later, he co-starred opposite Johnny Depp, Heather Graham and Ian Holm in the film adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel, "From Hell" (2001). His most recognized role commenced the same year when he appeared in "Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone" playing Hagrid, the half-giant groundskeeper of Hogwarts. Coltrane reprised the role in all seven sequels of the series. For his contributions to the field of acting, he was awarded a number of prestigious prizes and recognitions, some of which included: The British Academy Television Award for Best Actor, the Royal Television Society Award for Best Actor, The British Academy Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, and the Office of the Order of the British Empire for his services to drama.
