George R. Backhaus Jr., 70, of Route 66 died Monday, December 4, 2017, at St. Peter's Hospice Inn Albany after a long illness. Born in Troy, he was son of the late George R. Backhaus and May W. Capelle Backhaus. He had resided in the Poestenkill area all his life. He was a graduate of Averill Park High School class of 1965 and earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from State University of New York Albany. George was a biology teacher at Tamarac High School for 32 years, retiring in 2001. He was a member of the Troy Germania Hall Association and enjoyed traveling. Survivors include his companion, Russell Bonesteel, Poestenkill; a daughter, Michelle M. (Christopher Overcash) Backhaus, Colts Neck, NJ; a son, Brian R. (Stacey) Backhaus, Greenfield Center, NY; 4 grandchildren and a niece and three nephews. He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Richard Clark. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 10-11 AM with a funeral service at 11 AM with Matthew Sousa, officiating. Interment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery Menands. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of George R.
