Delwon Kenneth Cannon, 97, returned to his heavenly home on October 1, 2022. He was preceded in death by the love of his life Gloria Cannon. His love and devotion to
her, his family and Jesus Christ was the focus of his life.

Delwon was born in Sacramento, California to Fred and Bessie Cannon on December 8, 1924. Shortly after his birth, the family moved back to Alturas where he and Gloria would remain for the next seventy plus years. Later in life he and Gloria moved to Redding, California to be closer to family and escape cold winters. They lived in Redding for eight years, became active members of Little Country Church and made many loving memories with family and friends. In 2019 they decided to give up their own home and moved to Roseville, California, living with their son Dale until Delwon's passing.

Delwon's first job was at age twelve, for the railroad, where he spent his summer putting out fires between Alturas and Lakeview along with two of his friends. Three years later he went to work full time at the Dorris Ranch. Delwon worked his way up from ranch hand to foreman. He loved working on the ranch and all that came with it. He especially loved time spent in the saddle moving cattle with the other cowboys between the ranch, Devil's Garden and the Warner Mountains.

Many of those he worked with on the ranch were childhood friends or cousins. His love of rodeos, roping, and cowboying were an integral part of who he was. In 1955 he left the ranch, which was later sold to the Federal Government and became the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge. A year later he went to work for the US Forest Service. He worked on the road crew, was a heavy equipment operator and certified blaster. During the winter months he worked in construction and maintenance, as well as in the Sign Shop. As you travel through Modoc National Forest, much of his handiwork is still on display. Throughout his career he formed many lifelong friendships with the members of his crew. He spent numerous summers away from home, fighting forest fires throughout the state. With his ranch and Forest Service experience, he became a "Jack of all Trades" and there was no job that he wouldn't tackle. Throughout his life, when he wasn't occupied at his day job, he was working on someone's home, barn, or business doing wiring, plumbing, or remodeling. If there was a job to do, he was your guy.

While working at the ranch, Delwon met a beautiful blonde-haired girl, who was living with his Aunt Marcia and Uncle Roy. It didn't take long before he realized that she was the girl for him. On February 14, 1950, they were married in Alturas, in the home of his sister, Jewel and Neal Phillips. The evening before their marriage, Delwon gave Gloria a ride in a wheelbarrow down Main Street. This was the beginning of a life filled with
adventure together.

They raised their family in Alturas, where they were active members of the Assembly of God Church. Delwon had a mischievous side and loved playing practical jokes. The most memorable was a water fight that ended with a garden hose inside their house, much to Gloria's dismay. He was rarely without a smile and met most challenges by telling us; "It could be worse!" always with a giggle. He and Gloria loved to travel, and it didn't matter if it was in an RV, an airplane, on a cruise ship or in a car. Whether together or with family they enjoyed and made the most of every opportunity.

Gloria was number one in Delwon's heart. Ever the gentleman, he was devoted to loving and caring for her always. The way in which he lived his life and treated others was a testament to his love for the Lord. He loved the fresh mountain air and beauty that Modoc is known for. Though he left for a time, he always yearned for that Modoc lifestyle, only true Modocer's are familiar with.

He leaves a legacy of how to live one's life to the fullest and how to care for those you love.

Delwon is survived by his three sons and one daughter, 54 grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In honor of Delwon's wishes, a Graveside Service will be held at Alturas Cemetery on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alturas Country Jam organization.
