Funeral services for George W. Bennett, 97, El Reno resident, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, in the Alfalfa Baptist Church in Alfalfa, Okla. Burial followed in the Alfalfa Cemetery under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.
George W. Bennett was born Nov. 20, 1910, to W.A. and Leona (Houck) Bennett in the Alfalfa area and passed away late Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at Grace Living Center in El Reno.
He was raised in the Alfalfa area and attended school at Alfalfa through the 10th grade, when he transferred to Weatherford and graduated in 1928 from Weatherford High School. He continued his education attending Oklahoma Baptist University and Oklahoma State University and graduated from Southwestern State College in Weatherford where he received his degree in education. He married Miss Lavon Hodge on July 18, 1936, in Cordell, and they made their home on the Bennett farm for 50-plus years. He was an Industrial Arts teacher as well as teaching math and science. He taught school at Port, Cowden and Colony, but most of his teaching career was spent at Alfalfa.
As well as teaching for several years, he farmed, raised cattle, wheat and cotton. They always planted a big garden and shared the produce with family and friends. They retired and moved off the farm to El Reno in 1998.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lavon (they celebrated their 71st anniversary on July 18, 2007); a son, Bill Bennett; three sisters and eight brothers.
He was a member of the Alfalfa Baptist Church and served in several positions in the church. He was now a member of First Baptist Church of El Reno. He had always been a handyman and loved woodworking.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth Bennett and wife, Zelta of El Reno, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Bennett of Eakly. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Cynthia Bennett of El Reno, Kevin Bennett and wife, Julie of Yukon, Gregg Bennett and wife, Bessie of Yukon, Bill (Skip) Bennett of Eakly and Darin Bennett of Weatherford. Also, five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Zachary and Bethany Bennett of Yukon and Cheyenne and Peyton Bennett of Eakly; four step-grandchildren, Adam, Monica, Sam and Danielle Harris, and one step-great-grandchild, Malacki Harris; a brother, Leon Bennett of Chickasha; and numerous nieces and nephews.
