Berry, Travis S. A native of Alabama, Dr. Travis S. Berry, Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church, Plano passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at his home in Plano, Texas. During his twenty-two year tenure as pastor of the church (1964-1986), Dr. Berry had a history of involvement with community of Plano. He served on numerous PISD and City of Plano committees. He was the chairman of The Human Relations Commission and an Advisory Director of the Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Berry was named Plano's Citizen of the Year as well as one of the 100 Heroes of the Plano Independent School District. Upon graduation from Auburn University, Dr. Berry began his career as a consulting engineer but the world was at war so he saw active duty as a 1st Lieutenant in the Aleutian Islands, serving in the US Army. Returning home, he furthered his education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Texas Christian University, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. His denominational service included missionary service to Brazil, holding offices in both the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Southern Baptist Convention, as well as serving as trustee for both Baylor University and the Baylor Health Care System. After retirement from the pastorate, he served as Vice President of Baylor Health Care System's Office of Church Relations. He and wife Bernice (a retired PISD teacher) are the parents of two grown children, Michael (deceased) and Mary Alice. A service to celebrate Dr. Berry's life will be on Wednesday July 22nd at 1:00PM at the First Baptist Church, Plano. The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 1300 East 15th Street, Plano, TX 75074.
