He was the son of John Marshall White and Mary Ann "Mollie" London White (1861-1888). (It is easy to wonder if she died in childbirth).

From his obituary in the Morganton News-Herald , January 1902:

Death of Charlie White

Charlie White, son of John White, of Glen Alpine, died last Sunday . . .after an illness of about a week from pneumonia. Deceased was nearly 19 years of age, and was employed in the Southern Railway shops at Birmingham,His father reached his bed side the day before the end came and brought the remains home, arriving at Glen Alpine on Tuesday. The funeral was held at the Methodist church in Glen Alpine yesterday evening at 3 o'clock. Rev. J.W. Jones conducted the church services. Deceased was a member in good standing of Wiliam McKinley Council, Jr. O. U. A. M., of Birmingham, and was buried with the honors of the order by Burkemont Council of Morganton. The young man was also a consistent member of the Methodist church and died in the hope of a bright beyond.
