LONE GROVE Graveside rites for John Wilford Dark, 83, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at Lone Grove Cemetery with The Rev. Richard Kerr officiating.

Born on Sept. 27, 1924, in Wortham, Texas, to Charles Forrest and Myrtle Bell Calame Dark, he died on Feb. 4, 2008, in the Norman veterans hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

He married Jackie Lee Nettles on Nov. 20, 1945, in Levelland, Texas. She preceded him in death on July 6, 1998.

During Wold War II John served in the U.S. Army as a heavy machine gunner in the battles of Southern France, the Rome-Arno, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Service Ribbon, Silver Service Star and Bronze Arrowhead. He also completed parachute training and was attached to a parachute field artillery battalion when discharged.

Mr. Dark had been a resident of Lexington since 2001, moving there from Lone Grove. He was a member of Lone Grove Masonic Lodge and First Baptist church. While in Lexington, he attended Slaughterville First Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and working on small engines. He retired from Mobil Oil Company in line maintenance after 35 years of service.

Survivors include his sons, Dwayne Dark and wife, Ann, Clearlake, Texas, and Russell Dark and wife, Diane, Lone Grove; daughters, Rebecca Dodson and husband, Gary, Lewisville, Texas, Diana Jarman and husband. Ronald, Noble; a brother, Robert Dark, Norman; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Bearers will be James Ginn, Barney Allen, Charlie Taliaferro, Randy Schoonover, Bob Underwood and Ed Watson.

Visitation will be at Harvey-Douglas Lone Grove Chapel starting at 1 p.m. today. Family hour is 6 to 7 this evening.
