Capt. Evan Johnson Machen was the son of Cecil Evans Machen and Sadie Johnson. He was born on November 13 1918. He married Marilyn Jane Elliott in July of 1943. They had no children.

According to family records fighter pilot Captain Machen was a killed in action on April 8, 1944 over Salzewedel, Germany during World War II. The following newspaper clipping tells of the missing in action report called to his parents.

Capt. Evan J. Machen, 25, San Bernardino fighter pilot credited two weeks ago with shooting down two Nazi planes, has been missing over Germany since April 8, the War department informed San Bernardino relatives last night. The officer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil E. Machen of 339 Alexander street and the husband of Mrs. Marilyn Machen, 1273 D. street. / Captain Machen entered the Army via the Washington National guard which he joined while a student at Washington State college. Previously he had been graduated from San Bernardino schools. He was employed in the Harris Co. shoe department before entering military service in September, 1940. / The San Bernardino officer received his captaincy recently. First news of his promotion was contained in Associated Press dispatches on the Brunswick raid when he was credited with shooting down two German planes. The raid was April 8, the date on which he has been reported missing.
