Obituary

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Cheryl Ann Hicks, age 63 of West Jefferson, NC on Friday, March 18, 2022 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. While we celebrate her life, being free of pain, and her presence with the Lord, she will be dearly missed.

Cheryl was born on April 28, 1958 in Welch, West Virginia to the late Ganes and Hassie Lewis Hicks. She grew up in Kimball, WV, played basketball at Welch High School, where she graduated. After high school Cheryl went to work for Steven's Clinic until her parents moved to West Jefferson. Following her Father's death in 1981, Cheryl moved to West Jefferson to be with her mother and cared for her with love and devotion until her death in 2018.

Cheryl loved flowers, birds, mowing grass, visiting the "Roundabout," being outdoors, & reading. She loved country & gospel music, had a quick wit & loved to cook for others; including making cookies for her doctor's offices, nursing home staff, residents & others. She co-owned The Shepherd's Staff bookstore in downtown West Jefferson with Geraldine Reed for over twenty years. As a member of Warrensville Baptist Church, she tirelessly volunteered her time and skills to support others; including helping with Vacation Bible School & being the Treasurer of Women on Mission (WOM). She was devoted to her family and loyal to her friends. She loved to make others smile and asked friends to continue to supply her pastor's mother with jigsaw puzzles and her doctors, nurses and nursing home staff with cookies.

Cheryl's dying wish was that we would all be together in heaven one day. In the hospital, she said to Lisa and Amy, "Promise me that you will accept the Lord as your Savior. How else will we be together again?" Through her pain and suffering she never lost faith and knew that in heaven she would be reunited with her beloved parents.

Remember Cheryl with Proverbs 31-25-26 "She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise and she gives instructions with kindness."

Cheryl is survived by: one brother, Wayne Hicks and wife Jane of Welch, West Virginia, one sister, Sue Hicks of Abingdon, Virginia, two nieces, Lisa Dolan and husband John and Amy "Cheryl" Gray, two nephews, Wayne Hicks II and wife Tisha and Scott Hicks and wife, Julie. Several great-nieces and nephews also survive and will always remember Cheryl's strawberry jelly, UNO games, trips to Tweetsie, grape juice, and Christmas gifts. Cheryl never missed an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of her loved ones and was a touchstone in the life of her nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at 12:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Reverend Wade Huntsinger. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 11:00-12:00 p.m., a service, then committal will follow at the graveside. The family would also like to extend an invitation for all to join them for a meal provided by Cheryl's loving church family at Warrensville Baptist Church following services. Cheryl and her family are honored for all to come.
