He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 1937. During WWII he was captured and placed on one of the Japanese "hell ships" for POWs, the Oryoku Maru. The Oryoku Maru was bombed and sunk by the Allies on 15 Dec 1944. Lt. Goodman was one of 200 Allied POWs that died that day. His name is on a memorial for him at the Manilla American Cemetery in the Philippines. There is also a memorial stone for him at Arlington Cemtery. A Purple Heart was presented to his mother for his service
