Maria Elfida Hernandez passed away July 6, 2022 at the age of 85 surrounded by family.

Rosary will be at 6:00 PM Friday, July 8, 2022 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with funeral mass being said at 10:00 AM Saturday July 9, 2022 at St. Margaret of Cortona Catholic Church in Big Lake. Burial will follow in Glen Rest Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Maria was born on August 14, 1937, in Allende Mexico to Jesus and Dominga Moncada. Later in life, she met her husband Pedro, and they made their way to the United States where she would go on to have four children and settle down in Big Lake. She would raise her family in Big Lake and watch her children grow up and graduate from Reagan County High School. Maria would become a devoted worker and work many years at Big Lake Care Center until she retired late in her life.

Maria was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with all her family. Maria enjoyed watching her own children at sports and school events as well as seeing her grandchildren play sports at the very same fields. Maria would wear all her Reagan County clothes and wear buttons of every grandchild to display proudly. No matter the occasion, Maria made sure she was there to spend time with her family and enjoy and celebrate all of life's memories and special occasions.

Maria enjoyed cooking for her family, every morning she would have a fresh stack of homemade tortillas with refried beans and a pot a coffee waiting for anyone that needed a quick breakfast before work or school. Her family loved eating her famous enchiladas. Maria enjoyed raising and taking care of her cats and had a special place for animals in her heart. Maria was devoted to her church, St. Margaret of Cortona in Big Lake; she would never want to miss a mass and would even ask to be taken home if out of town to attend mass at her beloved church. She would always make time for church and was a very spiritual woman. Every time her family left her house, she would stop them, turn them around to give a blessing and prayer across their forehead, and tell them to be careful. Maria would then wait on her porch and bless your vehicle as you took off and watch you drive down the street safely before going back inside. She will be deeply missed by all her loved ones.

Maria was predeceased by her parents Jesus and Dominga, her husband Pedro, and her granddaughter Tammy Jo.

She is survived by her children, Bertha Garza and her Husband Pepe, Pedro Hernandez, Jr., Dora Subia and her Husband Eddie, Mario Hernandez and his wife Loriza; her grandkids, Yvonne, Chris, Wendy, Josh, Lendall, Orlando; her great-grandkids, Jordan, Jared, Eddie, Jacob, Jackson, Quinn, Isabel (Bel), Lyric, Carter, Teagan, Jaylon, Emma and Charlie; and her niece, Lori Pruitt and her Husband Wesley and her family Stephanie, Leanna, AJ, Caleb, Hailey, Avalee and Niko.
