James Edward King was born in Knoxville to George Matthew King and Amanda Elnore King (Smith) on July 31, 1917. He was the youngest of 10 children. Henry, John, Willis and Morgan were his brothers. Martha, Mollie, Lucy, Geneva and Hazel were his sisters. His father died of diphtheria when he was 13. He adored his mother "Mamie" throughout her life. She died on December 5, 1953. He was especially close to his sisters Martha and Geneva. Even though there was an age difference with his brother John (Johnnie), they were forever getting into trouble and playing jokes on others.
He worked with Jenkin's Dry Cleaners and Royal Cleaners before and after service in World War II.
He was an Army sergeant and spent part of his five years in the Army in Germany.
He met Sylvia Arnold in Okeechobee, Florida. They married in February, 1946 and later moved to Florida. A daughter, Sylvia Elnore King was born in 1947 and a daughter Boni was born in 1952. Ed worked in the dry cleaning business in Fort Pierce Florida. He suffered a sudden heart attack on July 2, 1958.
