PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF QUINCY & ADAMS CO. ILLINOIS, by Landry Genosky, published 1974, p. 712, Samuel M. Curless:

"Curless, Samuel M. was one of the best known merchants of a former day in Adams County. He was known as "Uncle Sam" to his many friends in the Loraine area. He was the son of John and Rachael Seals Curless, born one and one-half miles east of Loraine on Sept 19, 1856. He received his formal education after he was twelve years old. The family moved to LaGrange, Missouri, so he could attend college. There he met Miss Ella Windsor whom he married in 1875. — He returned to Loraine and opened a blacksmith shop and did a flourishing business. At that time, he received $1.50 for shoeing a horse. His natural inclination for merchandising led him into that business. He and a young brother, Addison, went into the general merchandising business and Curless Brothers Store was one of the largest in the county. — They started in business by buying $10,000 worth of goods, purchasing their stock in carload lots. They sold flour under their own brand name of "Curless Brothers Best," buying six car loads at one shipment. One time they shipped in seven car loads of potatoes. The first to arrive was sold, loaded into wagons, and hauled away within 55 minutes. — After many years the brothers dissolved business and Samuel Curless built and stocked a men's clothing store called the East Side Store. (It was east of the railroad tracks). He operated this business for 17 years and after 55 years as a merchant, he retired in 1936 at the age of 80 years. — Mr. and Mrs. Curless were the parents of 3 daughters: Mrs. Albert (Lena) Henderson, Mrs. Newell (Mae) Sapp and Mrs. William M (Snoda) Steiner. Mrs. Curless died in 1925."
