A graduate of Harvard College, Edwin started a graduate program in English—loving the works of Cummings and Yeats. He soon changed course to follow in his father's footsteps and entered the field of Medicine, attending SUNY Downstate and graduating in 1951. He did his internship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, and his residency in psychiatry at Boston State Hospital. Edwin worked for more than 20 years at McLean Hospital and had a thriving private practice at Mount Auburn Hospital. He semi-retired from practice in the late 1990's, but continued to work in psychiatry for the state of Massachusetts at DDS, working part time into his mid-eighties. He was proud that his son Mark, an internist, continued the family medical tradition.
His 62 year marriage to Rhoda was a true partnership, full of laughter and love through good and challenging times until her death in 2015. An avid lover of English literature, operetta, and Broadway musicals, he would often quote Shakespeare, Keats, Yeats and the occasional line from Gilbert & Sullivan or Guys and Dolls. He remained happy, content, and full of song, love and laughter up to his passing.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 11 a.m., Newton Cemetery Chapel, 791 Walnut Street, Newton Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Cohen Florence Levine Estates, Attn: Joanne Thomas, 201 Captains Row, Chelsea, MA 02150.
