Helen and her two older brothers, Reuben Wilson and Phillip, all contracted diphtheria. Although all three of the children received treatment, Helen who was a in a weakened state due to a recent case of measles, did not survive. She died in the front room of Henry and Tera Eola Larkins Loggins' family home about a mile out of Yorkville on the Yorkville Newbern Road. Her parents, Reuben Wilson and Grace Truman/Lois Edwards Loggins, Sr. were living in the household, too.
According to Helen's Aunt Tucker, Helen was a bright and energetic child with a winning personality.
Reuben and Grace carried such sadness that they seldom spoke of the loss of Helen. In fact, one of the last gifts that Helen received was a Teddy Bear from her parents. So great was their grief, they were never able to give their daughter, Bettye Jean, who was born six months after Helen's death, a Teddy Bear.
The marker for Helen's grave was not added until after the death of her father, Reuben. Since Helen was only called Helen and almost forty-two years had passed since the loss of Helen, Grace, forgot that little Helen had been named for both of her grandmothers, Tera Eola Larkins Loggins and Hellen Lois Lawrence Edwards. Little Helen's death certificate that was signed by her father carries the name Tera Hellen Loggins.
