STONINGTON - Captain Herbert Milton "Buster" Aldrich, a longtime resident of Hancock County, passed away at the age of 89 on Saturday, October 5, 2013, in Blue Hill. Buster was born July 12, 1924, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Herbert Milton and Leonie Gladys (Barter) Aldrich.

At the age of 5, his family moved to Stonington where he grew up and attended local schools. Throughout his life, Buster had many vocations including: lobster fisherman, running sardine carriers, and granite truck driver. While delivering granite, he had the opportunity to travel and visited many different cities until becoming the mail boat captain for Isle Au Haut. As mail boat captain, Buster made many trips, in all kinds of weather, ensuring packages and mail arrived sound for the island's residents. In 1992 he retired from his position after 30 years of service. In 1998, he married Glenna Gross of Stonington. For the next 13 years, Buster and Glenna made their way to Florida to enjoy their time together during winter months. In his free time, he enjoyed listening to the television and following the transits of local boats on his maritime scanner.

Buster is survived by his wife, Glenna Gross at home is Stonington; stepdaughter, Barbara L. Eaton, and family of Stonington; brother, George Aldrich of Deer Isle; nephews, Garrett Aldrich and Greg Aldrich, both of Deer Isle; and niece, Kathy Sizemore of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will begin at 2 PM Thursday, October 10, 2013, at the Stonington chapel of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes with Rev. Ted Hoskins officiating. Private interment will be scheduled later at Evergreen Cemetery, Stonington. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, Stonington.
