'Over the period of time which I spent in the Big Creek country (spring 1947, January 1949) I spent sometime in the Wash Flud home. My last visit was likely in very late 9148 or early '49. By then, this well remembered couple had moved to a little house which was located at the side of Highway 123 and near Piercetown store and post office. There were several other guests present that day, causing Bonnie to use a dishpan in which to cook a delicious blackberry cobbler. Mr. Flud died soon therafter. Some time after my departure from the Big Creek country, there came a time of severe trial in my life. Somehow Aunt Bonnie Flud heard of this and soon there came a scribbled but earnest letter from this plain but very strong mountain woman, offering consolation and expressing an unfailing confidence, along with profound understanding and humble advice. That letter and its message has often been reviewed again and again. And sitting here in my Virginia home, some eight hundred miles from where I relished that blackberry cobbler dipped from a dish pan, I cannot help but wonder if Aunt Bonnie might yet be living. But if not, somewhere in sight of Red Rock Point there is a grave on which I would love to place a white rose when gentle spring again spreads its verdant green over the Big Creek valley.' - V. N. Phillips, 'The New Ozark Cousins'
