Ellen Loretta Bawdon, 95, of Highmore, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller, surrounded by her family.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 3, 2022, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Highmore, with Father Paul Josten officiating. Burial will be at the Highmore City Cemetery, Highmore.

Ellen was born September 27, 1927, in Miller, South Dakota to James William Manning and Mabel Anna (Rundle) Manning. She attended grade school in Midland Township and Ree Heights Town School. She started high school in Ree Heights and graduated from Miller High School. Ellen was united in marriage on June 14, 1947, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to John Otis Bawdon. They lived on a farm southeast of Highmore. Ellen moved into Highmore December of 2014.

Ellen worked afterschool and Saturdays for C.M. Carroll Lawyer during her senior year of high school. After graduating from high school, she worked one year in the Hand County Auditor's Office and one year in the Hand County Treasurers Office. Ellen was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith. Ellen loved family gatherings with lots of good food with family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Ellen liked gardening both vegetable and flowers, doing crafts, sewing, bowling, dancing, watching rodeos and bull riding. She was 4-H project leader while her children were growing up. Ellen then helped at the 4-H achievement days for many years. She was a member of Cowbells and Red Hats. She enjoyed playing Yahtzee and the friends at the Highmore Manor Apartment.

Survivors include three children Bonnie (David) Ping of Highmore, Larry (special friend Lori) Bawdon of Highmore, and Julie (Andrew) Canham of Miller; seven grandchildren: Travis (Katherine) Ping of Highmore, Lacey (Jason) Roberts of Hartford, Matthew (special friend Kate) Bawdon of Highmore, Jessica (Nick) Berndt of Herreid, Alora (Jesse) Weinrich of Wilber, Nebraska, Riley (special friend Natalie) Canham of Miller, and Carter (Ashton) Canham of St. Lawrence; ten great-grandchildren: Talon Ping, Lainee Ping, Mesa Ping, TeeKay Ping, Brooklyn Roberts, Aylah Roberts, Eli Weinrich, Easton Weinrich, Maverick Berndt, and Gabe Berndt; sister-in-law Janice Manning; and many nieces and nephews.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and all her sisters and brothers: John Manning, Florence Danielson, Theresa Peck, James Manning, Raymond Manning, Martin Manning, Mary Parmely, Leo Manning, William (Bill) Manning, Marcella (Sally) Brock, Arthur (Artie) Manning.
