Baron spent his boyhood in Proctorsville, attending district school, working at farming and later as a clerk in the local store of Robbins & White. When still a young man he went to St. Louis where two of his sisters had relocated, and for many years he worked as a bookkeeper and accountant. He was an exceptional worker and commanded a high salary for his management style and dedicated service. At one time he engaged in the hardware business with his brother, John Smith Proctor in Stillwater, Minnesota.

Served as Paymaster aboard the U.S. Gunboat Cincinnati.
