Nellie Vaughn Jeffries O'Brien passed away to the great beyond on Thursday January 13, 2022. In her final weeks on earth, she was surrounded by love, laughter, great stories and generations of her family, down to her great grandson. Nell or "Bam" as we lovingly called her, was born in Star, NC on October 26, 1925. She spent her childhood in Raleigh and then moved to Chase City, Virginia in 1950. With her husband, Wyatt O'Brien, they ran the O'Brien Drug Store for over 50 years, which is fondly remembered by many as the social hub of a small Virginian town. Nell's love for learning began in high school at Needham Broughton High in Raleigh where she longed to be a journalist. It was a different time then and sadly her ambitious heart never got to fully explore those aspirations. But, her curiosity, inquisitive mind and passion for maps continued throughout her life and decades later she finally got to travel and see much of the world. Bam raised three incredible children, David, Cece and Tim O'Brien who were all by her side at the end of life. Nell was preceded in death by her mother Nonnie and her beloved brothers Denver, LaVerne and Sammy.
If you knew Nell, then you probably have a story about her strong personality and brusque humor. She was fiercely opinionated, delightfully proper and knew what she liked and voiced loudly what she didn't. Bam found a love for painting watercolor and for decades grew the most luscious white calla lilies for her church. Our Bam knew every song lyric to every song written between 1935-1985 and spent her best years singing them while piddling around the kitchen. She was a faithful member of her Church, St. John's Episcopal in Chase City and later Episcopal Church of the Creator in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Her family envisions her singing and dancing in heaven with Wyatt, a big brass band and a large cup of pinot grigio in hand. Sing LOUD Bam, we will love you forever.
