He was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Oswego, Kansas to Albert and Cora Carrell.
Robert was a Navy Veteran of WWII from 1943 to 1946, spending three years in the South Pacific Islands. His life was spared when his ship, the LCI (g) 449 was hit, although 60 pecent were killed or wounded. Robert worked for General Motors in Flint, Mich., and retired after 32 years. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 2590 in Carthage, Mo.
For the last 10 years he has been trapped in an unfamiliar world called Alzheimer's. Death freed him and put him in a better place. He loved the Lord and loved his family. His grandchildren were his delight.
Robert is survived by his wife Ruth of many years' a daughter Wendy "Scott" Carpenter; a granddaughter, Lindsay Carpenter; a grandson; Trevor Carpenter, all of Clio, Mich.; four brothers; Jim of Wichita, Kan., Jess and Charles of Chetopa, Kan., and Herb of Harrison, Mich.; one sister; Anna Bass of Columbus, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at Ulmer Funeral
Home Chapel in Carthage with burial at Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
