Margaret Sandford Banister was an author of several short stories and two novels, "Tears Are For The Living" and "Burn Then, Little Lamp". She was a graduate of Sweet Briar College of Amherst, Virginia as well as admistrator of the college's public relations. Though she was born and grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, she spent most of her adult life in Washington, D.C. working on "The Washingtonian" magazine. During World War II, Miss Banister became an information specialist in the War Department, and remained at the Pentagon for fourteen years; from 1943 to 1949 as Chief of the Women's Interests Section and for seven years in the Office of Public Information of the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Miss Banister was a daughter of the late Blair Banister and Marion Langhorne Glass Banister, also interred in the family's plot in the Spring Hill Cemetary, Lynchburg, Virginia.

June 29th. each year is Margaret Sandford Banister Memorial Day in Lynchburg, Virginia. All who wish to honor this great lady is invited to meet at 2:00 PM at her gravesite in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
