The son of John & Elizabeth (Story or Stone) Carpenter, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living with his family in Paradise Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Lancaster August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. F, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.
2. Enlisted in Lancaster July 8, 1863, in the aftermath of the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 9 as a sergeant with Co. F, 47th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 13, 1863.
3. Enlisted in Philadelphia February 27, 1864, mustered into federal service there March 24 as a sergeant with Co. G, 186th Pennsylvania Infantry, reduced to ranks November 30, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company August 15, 1865.

He married Anna Hershey in 1867 and fathered Harry H. (b. 04/03/69), Mary "Mollie" (b. 01/13/71), Jacob (b. 05/13/73), Lemon (b. 09/15/75), Sarah E. (b. 11/05/76), Cora (b. 02/27/78), Katharine (b. 07/16/80), Oram (b. 05/15/83), Emma (b. 03/15/88), and Anna (b. 10/29/90). He died in Lancaster's St. Joseph Hospital from a "concussion of brain" after he was "found along the railroad [with a] depressed fracture of skull [with a] lacerated scalp."

His death certificate lists a birth date of July 8, 1843.
