ATOKA -- Services for longtime Atoka resident Darwin Hale Setliff, 87, Ardmore, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2001, at the Penn and A Street Church of Christ in Atoka. Gary Henson will officiate with Rick Popejoy and David Harendt assisting. Interment will be at Green Meadows Cemetery.

Mr. Setliff was born May 17, 1913, at Creta, Jackson County, Okla., one of 12 children born to Benjamin Smithers and Aletha Darwin Setliff. He passed away March 12, 2001, in Ardmore, at the age of 87 years, nine months and 25 days.

He graduated from Eldorado High School, Eldorado, Okla., attended Cameron College in Lawton and graduated from Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater with his bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry and education.

He and Rebecca Josephine Briscoe of Frederick, Okla., were married Dec. 22, 1939, in Oklahoma City.

A retired rancher and businessman, Darwin came to Atoka in November 1940 when he joined the Farm Security Administration. In 1948, the Setliffs purchased Walker's Grocery Store, and after re-selling the store to Mr. Walker, Mr. Setliff opened Setliff Implement Company in 1949, the first full service John Deere dealership in the Atoka area. The Setliffs and Wendell Hunt purchased Paul Kelley's Hardware and Furniture Store in 1958. In 1970 he sold his implement business to Joe Brecheen. In 1978, when the Setliffs acquired the Hunt's interest in the hardware and furniture business, Mr. Setliff relocated his business to a new building on South Mississippi in Atoka. Mr. Setliff sold the business to Bob and Myrna Olds in 1981.

Mr. Setliff was steadfast in his involvement with his family, church and community, serving as a deacon and elder for many years in the Penn and A Street Church of Christ. He also served on the City Council and school board and was past president of the Atoka Lions Club. He was a founding member of the Atoka County Industrial Authority and of the First National Bank were he served as director. In addition to his business and community interests, Mr. Setliff was actively involved in ranching throughout his life, enjoying many years of work on the family homeplace at Atoka.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine, of the home in Ardmore; two children; Rebecca J. Heatherly and husband, Glenn, of East Abilene, Texas, and Meredith C. Smartt and husband, Claude E., of Ardmore; grandchildren, Ronald G. Heatherly of Arlington, Texas, Phillip A. Heatherly of Euless, Texas, Rebecca A. Powell and husband, James, of Flower Mound, Texas, John C. Smartt and wife, Shelli, of Carrollton, Texas, David E. Smartt of Dallas, Robert M. Smartt of Springfield, Mo., and Rachael L. Martino and husband, Nicola, of Ardmore; great-grandchildren, Charles A. "Chase" Heatherly, Lacey R. Heatherly, Bethany L. Powell, Caleb J. Powell, Isaac W. Powell and Julie Meredith Powell; four brothers, Ennis Setliff, of Crowell, Texas, Ben S. Setliff and wife, Dorothy, of Amarillo, Texas, David E. Setliff and wife, Melba, of Lubbbock, Texas, Duane A. Setliff and wife, Margie, of Dallas; two sisters, Gladys A. Setliff of Hereford, Texas, and M. Ruth Johnston of Mesa, Ariz.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; other relatives, and many dear and loved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Aletha Setliff; a son, Michael Darwin Setliff in 1980; a brother, Chester B. Setliff; and four sisters, Lochie Setliff, Bernice Tarter, Daisy I. Rowland and Eva Mae Earnhart.

Casket bearers will be grandsons, Ronald Heatherly, Phillip Heatherly, John Smartt, David Smartt, Robert Smartt, Jim Powell, Nicola Martino and Chase Heatherly. Honorary bearers are Jim Briggs, Clifford Brown, Morris Cochran, Ronnie Cochran, A.B. Elrod, Lee Evan, Ralph Fugate, Russell Fugate, Ray Harness, Jesse Knight, Tom Matlock, Charles McCall, Bill Stewart, Cap Stewart, Royce Thomas, Brown Wyrick and Bill Young.

Family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Brown's Funeral Service Chapel in Atoka.
