The son of Emanuel & Mary (Shelly) Houdeshell, he married Mary Susan Greer February 18, 1851, in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Sarah Elizabeth (b. 02/26/52), John William (b. 10/16/53), Samuel Matthew & George Andrew (b. 10/26/57), Anna Mary (b. 08/30/59), Harriet Emma (b. 03/31/62), Jennie Ellen (b. 02/23/65), Harry Myers (b. 07/20/67), and Charles Albert (b. 11/04/70). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Butler Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 7" tall with black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 15 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.

Shortly after the war, he moved to Ohio where he lived out his life. Mary Susan died in 1884, and he married Lydia Ann Warner in 1895, who applied for a widow's pension based on his military service.
