Sherma Lu S. Smith, 89, of American Fork, passed away in Alpine on September 21, 2022. She was born April 16, 1933, in Alpine to Ralphus Moroni Smith and Thelma Ellanore Nicholes Smith. She was the only daughter and younger sister of Leon and Rulon.
Sherma attended elementary school in Alpine and graduated from American Fork High School in 1951, where she played clarinet in the marching band. After high school, she worked at Alpine Finance in American Fork. She was introduced to her future husband, Keith C. Smith, when he came in for a car loan.
Keith and Sherma were married on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1956, at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on December 6, 1968.
Working as a librarian in American Fork was one of her favorite things and she took great pride in the new library building. Her coworkers were lifelong friends and avid Neil Diamond fans. The group of librarians attended several of his concerts and celebrated his birthday each year.
Sherma loved reading, rose gardening, and bird-watching. She loved being active, working, talking to everyone she met, and she loved every animal she encountered.
Her greatest joys were her boys and grandchildren. She was happiest when she was around family. She was the ultimate host at family dinners, birthday parties, and on her front lawn for the Steel Days celebration.
Survivors include her sons: Martin K. (Jennifer) Smith, Michael W. Smith (Danette Smith), and Matthew R. Smith (Daralyn Smith). More importantly, she is the grandmother of nine and great-grandmother to four.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith, her parents, and brothers, Leon (Betty) Smith and Rulon (Donna) Smith, and a favorite aunt and uncle, LaRaie and Bill Capener.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. in the Alpine Mountainville Chapel, 165 North 100 East, Alpine. A viewing will be held Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North, American Fork, and Wednesday from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Burial in the American Fork Cemetery.
