Graveside services for Harlen Joe Hastings will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Sardis Cemetery near Jewett. Bro. Bill Hughes and Bro. Josh Gafford will officiate.

Harlen Joe Hastings transitioned from this world on September 18, 2022, at the age of 81 years, 11 months, and 7 days. Joe was born to Henry and Viley Hastings on October 11, 1940, and lived his entire life in Jewett-Leon County. He graduated from Jewett HS in 1958 and began his career as one of the prominent watermelon and cantaloupe farmers in Leon County and surrounding areas. Although he loved farming, ranching was his true calling. Nothing was more rewarding to Joe than working cows.

Joe was survived by his wife, Judy of 59 years who worked alongside him as a farmer and rancher. Many local residents will remember him sitting in Jewett on Highway 79 selling fresh produce. Joe was known to give more melons away than selling them. Everyone said he grew the sweetest watermelons and cantaloupes anyone had ever tasted.

Joe was also survived by his daughter, Audra Hastings; son, Shane Hastings & wife Josie; granddaughters, Brooke Bates & husband Jared, Shay Doyle & husband Brendan, and Olivia Hastings; one great granddaughter, Charlotte Bates; three sisters and one brother, Josie McCoslin, Ava Leach & husband Walter, Mary Gafford, and Eskill Hastings; numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Hastings; three brothers, and one sister.

Joe was never a stranger to hard work and instilled this trait into his children, grandchildren, and many young residents in Leon County. Many referred to him as Mr. Joe, Uncle Joe, or Pa. It wasn't uncommon for these young boys and girls to move into the house with Joe and Judy for the summer because they were treated like family. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
