John Wayles (1715-1773), was the father of Martha Wayles Jefferson, the wife of Thomas Jefferson 3rd U.S. President. Born in England, he soon immigrated to Virginia in the 1730s and married Martha Eppes which he had 3 children with, only one Martha lived to adulthood. He later again in 1749 to Tabitha Cocke and they had 4 daughters, he married Elizabeth Lomax in 1760, but she died a year later. According to Madison Hemings, after the death of his 3rd wife he began a relationship with a slave Elizabeth (Betty) Hemings from 1762 to 1773 which resulted in 6 children, their daughter Sally Hemings later became the alleged mistress of Thomas Jefferson.
