Casualty of the Great War, Horace was just 17. He was the son of Albert Joseph and Mary Rebecca Nicholls, of 69, Napier Rd., Gillingham, Kent.His parents are buried in Horace's wargrave but there names are not recorded thereon.

Horace served in the Royal Navy, H.M.S. Pembroke-Service No: M/9973.HMS Pembroke was the name given to a number of shore barracks at Chatham, Harwich and on the Forth. Horace served and died at Chatham.
