Joel enlisted at Anderson as a Private in Company "J" (the "Confederate Guards"), 4th South Carolina Infantry Regiment on 14 April 1861. The Regiment suffered great losses in battle and from disease, and was disbanded upon expiration of term of service in early 1862. Thereafter Joel served in Company "E", 4th South Carolina Infantry Battalion (a/k/a the 13th South Carolina Infantry Regiment).

He died of disease at the "South Carolina Hospital" in Manchester (then an independent city, now part of the City of Richmond). His grave is unmarked.
