She loved Jesus! She loved people! She loved music!
Winifred Marie Chittock went to be in the presence of the Lord on September 2, 2022, at the age of 97. Marie was born to Carl Hubert and Dessie Marie Irey Rutherford on March 26, 1925, in Eugene, Oregon.

At the age of four, she was enrolled in school as a first grader as a temporary solution to a shortage of students during hop picking season, which made it possible for their school to hire a second school teacher for all eight grades. She did so well that she stayed on and was, according to her mother, "the star pupil," earning good grades all the way through high school and graduating in 1941 at the age of 16. After graduation, she received further training at a vocational school and found a job as a secretary at a small real estate office.

On November 1, 1941, at a local dance hall, a mutual friend introduced Marie to Clinton Chittock. That evening they danced, and they went on their first date the very next day. This would be Marie's first and last time on ice skates - in her words, she gave quite a performance! They continued to see each other daily, and later that month Marie showed Clint a small 2-bedroom house, which he said he'd buy if she would live in it with him. She agreed, and they were married on January 1, 1942.

In August of 1942, Clint was drafted into the Army Air Corps, and Marie became a war wife. As soon as possible, she took a train from Eugene, Oregon, to Lincoln, Nebraska, to be near her husband while he completed aircraft mechanic school. After he finished, she followed him to Champaign/Urbana, Illinois, where Clint began prop specialist school. She found work as a waitress for a short time, but after six weeks, Clint was again sent to a new location, so Marie made the long train trip home back to Oregon, this time pregnant with their first child. After Sharon was born, the two of them joined Clint in Pyote, Texas. Shortly after the war, Marie gave birth to their second daughter, Susan, once again in Eugene, Oregon, and Clint returned home to his family later that year.
During this time, Clint and Marie came to faith in Jesus. Later in life, Marie would write of this experience: "God's precious Holy Spirit illuminated us both and we saw our need of salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who has become our Lord and Savior... I pray I will never stop praising the Lord for bringing us to Himself together."

While still in Eugene, they welcomed their third daughter, Lynnette, and in 1952 they moved their family to Selah, Washington, so Clint could attend Central Washington Bible College. In 1953, Marie gave birth to their fourth daughter, Carla, and 15 years later their fifth daughter, Heather, was born. As Heather grew, they took up boating and the three of them made beautiful memories in the San Juan Islands and British Columbia on The Lady Heather and The Lady Heather II. When their nest was empty, Marie and Clint spent a year traveling the country, and then for eight years they spent every winter volunteering at the Rio Grande Bible Institute in Edinburg, Texas. In all her years as a wife, mother, and grandmother, Marie was the embodiment of the love described in 1 Corinthians 13, which she gave to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Marie was also known for her love of music, and one of her most precious childhood memories was of her daddy playing the piano with her family gathered around singing. She had a song for every occasion and, most recently, she would burst out in song with the chorus "Blessed be the Name of the Lord."

Marie is survived by her four daughters - Susan Wells (Phil), Lynnette Nilsen, Carla Hull (Larry), and Heather Caton (Randy) - as well as seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, her brother, Harold, and sisters, Roberta and Beth. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Chittock, son-in-law Chuck Nilsen, daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Dennis Patrick, and son-in-law Greg Hinze.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 24 at 1:00 at Keith & Keith Funeral Home, 902 W. Yakima Ave.
