CAROL MARIE CORNWELL BURNS

Carol Marie Cornwell Burns was born on May 8, 1926 in Portland, Oregon, to Walter and Elacita Cornwell.

Like many children who grew up in the Great Depression, her childhood was unsettled, with frequent changes of address and schools. Carol's sisters Anne and Joan were her comfort through these times.

Carol was fortunate enough to have lived with her aunt and uncle, Helen and Carl Munson for a few years during which she graduated from Portland's Grant High School in 1944.

She was introduced to her future husband, James O. Burns in 1945, and was married on October 12, 1946. The Burns Family was established in the town of Condon, Oregon, where Carol was welcomed into the comfort of small-town living, staying busy with the family business, raising four children, and being very active volunteering in the community and her Catholic Parish. Carol was liked by all, and enjoyed hosting her friends on many occasions, particularly fond of her bridge groups. She was a politician's wife, always ready to host a visitor.

In 1976, Carol started a new chapter of her life when she moved to Beaverton, Oregon. At 50 years old, she was able to secure a job at Tektronix, a local electronics manufacturer, where she soldered circuit boards. She went to Community College, achieved an Associate's Degree focused on accounting, and moved into the accounting department at Tektronix, where she retired in 1991.

Carol enjoyed her home, garden, foreign travel, her Cocker Spaniels, and loved to entertain; her friends and family enjoyed many delicious meals from her kitchen.

Carol was always focused on her family, and in 2000 she moved to Vancouver, Washington, to be close to her son, Jeff. She became a parishioner at St John Catholic Church, where she enjoyed 20 years of service to the church with countless friendships made there. In 2020, with some health concerns and the COVID pandemic, Carol moved into her daughter Kate's home in Snoqualmie, Washington, where she enjoyed visits from friends and family. She was comfortable and surrounded with love. Carol passed away peacefully shortly after coming back to the town of her birth.

She is survived by her son, James C. (Elizabeth) of Spring, Texas; daughters, Anne (Charles) Porcelli of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and Kate (Dave) Sharp of Snoqualmie, Washington; and son, Jeff (Melissa) of Lake Oswego, Oregon. Carol's grandchildren include, Dominic, Addison and Vanessa Porcelli, Alexa, Tanner and Macey Sharp, and Todd Burns.

Carol made so many friends on her journey through life. She was kind and generous with her time, as she volunteered to so many causes that were important to her along the way. She made everyone feel comfortable and was truly the best listener, always wanting to learn about those she met. She was strong until the end, even though age made her mobility painful. She lived a life of grace, with her faith guiding her path.

There was a Funeral Service for Carol, on Friday, September 30, 2002, at St John's Catholic Church, 8701 NE 119th St, Vancouver, Washington 98662.
