Bobby Gerald Winters passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2019, surrounded by his family.

Bobby was born on March 14, 1927 in Arp, Texas. He spent most of his childhood in El Dorado, Arkansas. He finished high school in Jackson, Mississippi, graduating from Central High School with the Class of 1945. While in high school, Bobby served alongside his father in the Civil Air Patrol, and soon afterwards went into active duty with the United States Navy. After service in World War II on the U.S.S. Stickell, a destroyer, he attended the University of Mississippi.

He then moved to Natchez, Mississippi, and began work in the oilfield-equipment business, including years with Continental Emsco Company and Baker Oil Tools. He moved to Canton, Mississippi to serve as a deputy for his friend Sheriff Billy Noble. Following his service with the Madison County Sheriff's Office, he was appointed Chief of Police of the City of Canton. During his tenure as chief, he was wounded in the line of duty.

Bobby later served with the Mississippi Public Service Commission and then finished his law enforcement career with the Mississippi Gaming Commission, retiring at the age of 80.

Bobby loved being outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, riding horses, or simply visiting at the camp with family and friends. He was a member of Yucatan Hunting Club for 67 years.

Bobby is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Wallace Winters, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard L. Winters (Lennie North), his sister, Mary Jo Wright and husband Harvey and his brother, Charles Randolph Winters. He is survived by his children, Cookie Winters Hughes of Jackson, Gerry Winters and wife, Phebe, of Natchez, Missy Winters Lavender and husband, Ken, of Canton, and Lee Winters and wife, Kerri, of Pearl. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lain Hughes, Hicks Winters, Phebe Clare Westbrook, Virginia Grace and Bill Lavender, Jenni and Stephani Weeks, and Lolli Winters, and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 28, at First United Methodist Church in Canton, with a memorial service to follow at 6:00. At his request, Bobby's remains have been donated to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Memorials may be made there, to Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children, or the charity of your choice.
