Son of an English soldier stationed in Canada. After the death of his parents, he moved to the US. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army. During the war he participated in the Grierson's cavalry raid of 1863. In 1867 he published the story of his participation in that raid. After the war he was a successful business man in Battle Creek, Michigan; and in later life moved around ending up in Florida.
