Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Reuben Zimmerman Matthews, 73, passed away at his home in Fayetteville, NC on May 10, 2022.He was born January 13, 1949 in Winston Salem, NC to the late Reuben Zimmerman Matthews and the late Mildred Stancill Matthews. He was a decorated U.S. Army Sergeant First Class and retired in 1992 after serving over 23 years. After his military retirement he worked over eleven years as a Security Officer at Womack Army Medical Center. He enjoyed traveling, both helping and harassing friends, and showing his sense of humor by granting everyone a playful nickname. All who knew him would agree he was the southern definition of ornery: Mischievous, prankish, teasing, disagreeable but in a good way. He will be greatly missed, especially by his fellow veteran soldiers, all whom he all called brothers, and his loving relatives in Clemmons and Winston Salem, NC.In a final letter to his family, he wrote: Don't be sad, I enjoyed my life with you all, and 50+ years with my loving wife. I will miss y'all! He is survived by his wife, Sunny; son, Jimmy (Kaemi Combs Matthews), grandson, Justin; daughter, Kathleen Lovato; and grand-dogs, Bonz and Winston.A memorial with full military honors will be held at the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery Chapel (8220 Bragg Blvd, Spring Lake, NC) on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Fayetteville Korean Baptist Church (6873 Cliffdale Rd., Fayetteville, NC 28304) or to the Hospice Promise Foundation at Cape Fear Valley Hospice and Palliative Care (2301 Robeson St. Suite 202, Fayetteville, NC 28305).
